So we finally left Langkawi as we had FINALLY found somewhere that was due some sun!! The Perhentian Islands!! As usual the journey getting there was looong! we got Aki to dirve us to the port where he decided to join us for the boat journey to the other side..when we arrived we was expecting to be on a bus within an hour and on our way (as this is normally how it happens) but when we arrived we found out there is only one overnight bus that goes to Kuala Besut so we had to wait an agonising 7 hours until it left!! We were stranded in a weird little place with about 4 shops and a KFC! we spent the next 7 hours in KFC reading, eating and twiddling our thumbs. Poor Aki decided to stay with us for the day which must have been the most boring day off ever!
We eventually got on our nightbus (which was very nice and clean) and had a 10hour journey to the east cost of malaysia..
Arriving at 6.30am in the morning, we had to drag our bags round to the port and got ourselves a return tickets to The Perhentian Island! When our boat turned up I wasn't best pleased as it was a small little longboat and the water was verrry choppy! but this is the only way you can get to the island, so I had to push my fear aside and deal with it! after a horrifying, tearful half hour bumpy boat ride we had arrived!
We spent half hour checking out the accomodation on the island and had been told that Long Beach (which is generally where most backpackers stay) wasn't up and running yet as the rainy season had just ended and they were still re-building the shacks and huts! so we stayed on Coral Bay and found a lovely little bungalow, three storeys high (which was a bit of an exercise to climb to) and had a fantastic view of the beach and sea.
We hadn't realised the perhentians was such a deserted place so didn't know that ATM's didn't exist here which was a bit of a problem as we had only taken a bit of cash out before hand..so were now on a tight budget for the next 5 days.
This island was amazing! tiny! you could walk from one end to the other in about 10minutes, there was no transport, just our little legs to carry us around and only a few restaurants and bars had opened since the monsoon so was a very chilled and quiet place to be. This suited us just fine as it was our last 5 days in paradise before leaving Asia and we just wanted to relax and catch some rays!
We literally sunbathed, swam, read and ate for the next 5 days :) night times all there was to do was watch the movies they played in a couple of the bars, play cards or head back to our room and watch a film..the alcohol was very expensive here as it was all imported I guess so drunken nights were not in store for us on limited funds.
There was lots of wildlife on the island - we saw a horrible and huge spider in between some books we happened to be browsing through - it was thick and white and black in colour :( we also knew there were monitor lizards (which are about a meter long) roaming around but we only come across smaller ones, we had frogs outside our place, cicadas and gekos ofcourse!
A few more pics of our 5 days...
